Going into its 4th year of deployment worldwide, coherent 100G has become a widely adopted solution for Long Haul transport. As access and aggregation networks scale to meet the bandwidth requirements of mobile data, video, and cloud computing, the industry is now putting additional focus on low latency, cost-optimized and integrated 100G for the Metro. This presentation will focus on the deployment of 100G, and underlying technologies which must scale to 400G and beyond, to enable key applications such as data center interconnect and hybrid/private cloud services. The presentation will also address the technical and economic tradeoffs between Coherent and Non Coherent implementations that will be faced by Carriers and Enterprises when looking at solutions to address the Metro capacity crunch.

"Transport SDN" – easily enough said, but what does such a new concept hold? In fact, what can it hold? – and more importantly, what should this concept hold?

Control plane is key to improving the utility and efficiency of networks, and has provided fertile ground for innovation and strong industry debate as architecture, technology, implementation – and even standards – have been nourished to fruition.

GMPLS has developed into a mature technology over the past decade, and attention now moves to nascent multi-layer constructs, including PCE, CSO and ALTO. OpenFlow itself makes a bold claim for control plane simplification in the SDN future. The industry is facing many strategic questions.
