THE OPEN NETWORKING FOUNDATION WORKSHOP

Please note: this Workshop is open for all delegates

This Workshop has been organised by the ONF's Market Education Committee
Workshop Chair: Marc Cohn (Ciena)

Software Defined Networking and Network Functions Virtualization are continuing to rapidly evolve, compelling network operators in the Data Center Carrier Networks, and Large Enterprise to strategize how these major initiatives will transform their networks, operations, and business plan. While China and Japan are leading the way, SDN and NFV is reshaping carriers throughout the entire APAC region, as well as the world.

In this workshop, we will share initial experiences from forward-looking network operators who have deployed SDN and NFV. We also will examine the value of SDN, how standards are being altered, and the state of SDN. Openness is also a key theme that will be addressed throughout.

SDN, NFV & OPENFLOW – OPPORTUNITIES, DEVELOPMENT, APPLICATION

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) was founded in March, 2011 to develop and promote standards and best practices to facilitate adoption of SDN. Over 100 members are collaborating on OpenFlow – the first SDN standard – to open up the network to foster a more intelligent network architecture as well as a vibrant, software eco-system that benefits Data Centre, Carrier, and Enterprise/Campus segments.

09:00

1. Workshop Welcome

Dan Pitt | Executive Director | Open Networking Foundation

In this introductory session, the Executive Director for the Open Networking Foundation will welcome workshop participants and address how ONF is responding to the rapid industry progress on SDN.

2. ONF in 2015

Marc Cohn | Market Area Director | Open Networking Foundation

SVP, Marketing | ClearPath Networks

As the Open Networking Foundation enjoyed its 4th birthday, SDN continues to evolve, including its role in the community. In this presentation, we will look back on the progress accomplished since the prior APAC Congress in mid-2014, and assess its impact on OpenSDN. We will also share how the ONF itself has positioned itself for long-term success, and its priorities and goals for the year ahead.

4. Panel 1: The state of Open SDN in APAC

Near the top of the list of goals for SDN is broad openness, and a vibrant ecosystem of technology providers who embrace the new model for networking. Vendors and operators are attempting to achieve openness, but each is on its own timescale and plan to realize the vision of an open and programmable infrastructure. In this session, a diverse set of network operators, OEMs, and an industry analyst in the region will discuss and debate the progress and obstacles that the industry is facing on the journey to Open SDN.

5. Orchestration and SDN

Shahar Steiff | AVP New Technologies | PCCW Global

Board Director | MEF

Orchestration allows new services to be initiated and managed at varying levels in a dynamic networking environment. Among the challenges addressed, are how to abstract SDN applications from the details of the underlying infrastructure, how to address end-to-end services across domains, and the need for seamless automation. This presentation will address orchestration from an SDN perspective and review initiatives to address orchestration from a broad perspective.

7. Panel 2: How SDN is reshaping telecommunications standards

SDN and NFV are rewriting the rules for how technology is adopted in telecommunications networks. Both have dramatically altered the process and approach for network standardization, which many believe was long overdue for overhaul. A distinguished group of leaders from the Industry Groups, standards bodies, and open source projects that are driving the direction for SDN will share how SDN and NFV has affected the groups that they represent.

Innovative new SDN products that empower SPs to deliver profitable on demand network services, and enterprises to automate their DC-to-branch networks.

Session 1: DC/WAN overlay networks for enterprises and service providers

• In a world where applications can be spun up on virtual machines in seconds, enterprises must be able to establish network connectivity to their branch employees in an equally transparent and expedient manner. To accomplish this, the networks that connect users to their business applications must bridge the gap in agility and responsiveness so they can become just as nimble as the cloud-based applications and services they support.
• If you are an enterprise, come see how we use SDN technology to build up a single, cohesive, and fully integrated environment across the datacenter and WAN to maximize the responsiveness of business networking for the cloud era.
• If you are a service provider, come see how you can offer this capability as a service for your enterprise customers.

Session 2: Applying SDN to IP/Optical underlay networks

• To thrive in the cloud-dominated era of networking, IP/optical networks must become as agile and as efficient as the cloud applications and services that are dominating network traffic. This means being able to take new network services from concept to market in days, not years. It means moving to an on-demand service delivery model so applications can consume only what they need, when and where they need it. It means gaining greater control over network assets so networks can be run more efficiently and services can make best use of available bandwidth.
• Come find out about the new Alcatel Lucent SDN platform that will empower you to gain full control of your multi-layer, multi-vendor, multi-technology network so you can rapidly deliver new, on-demand network services in a scalable and cost-effective manner
