The new ETSI family of Common API Specifications greatly advances the prospect of real NFV Interop.

This panel will discuss the difference that these specifications will make in the NFV ecosystem - in order to foster NFVI as a common platform and help VNFs be managed in a common lifecycle. How will the industry achieve maximum benefit from NFV Common API, ETSI NFV PlugTests and other collaborative activities like OPNFV and plugfests?

Francisco-Javier Ramón | Head of Network Virtualisation, GCTO | Telefónica

Chair | Open Source MANO

While Network Virtualisation is regarded as a key enabler to make networks more flexible and agile, the understanding of how a virtualised network in production should look like is usually over-simplified, often leading to tactical or ad-hoc approaches to its operation.

In this presentation, Telefónica explains how a large virtual network really looks, the challenges for its operation, and how the layering and information models provided by Open Source MANO are essential to enable a scalable management and orchestration approach for the UNICA Program.

PANEL DEBATE - Zero Touch

As the software-defined and function-virtualised network become mainstream, the door is now open for change - even radical change - in OSS.

The preceding sessions set the stage for this discussion of:
• What we are ready to automate? When?
• How realistic are the prospects for introducing AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) approaches to the operational needs of carrier networks?
• What other advanced paradigms are under consideration? MEF approaches?

Key questions on Zero Touch are:
• Don't we need Analytics and Algorithms to automate intelligent machine learning before we can do Zero Touch?
• Can 'Black Boxes' work without ongoing intelligent inputs? For which Problems?
• Don't we need Analytics, 'Expert Systems' and 'Open Loop' Tools for Network Operations live personnel to capture their knowledge?
• What can we learn from the experience of Self-Organizing Networks (SON) that were stopped dead for almost 2 years by a 'Closed Loop' automation approach to complex RF spectrum optimization

The overall focus of this session is on practical approaches to Automation of Management, Orchestration and Optimisation.

PANEL DEBATE - Can SD-WAN Live Up to Its Potential?

Early deployments of SD-WAN are generating both opportunities and challenges.

For all of its simplifications, will SD-WAN be able to live up to its potential? Important questions surround its evolution: is it important for VNFs in SD-WAN to be interoperable, or even substitutable? Should SD-WAN solutions be delivered as pure software loads on any hardware, or are they delivered better as a bundle? How aware does an SD-WAN solution need to be of its underlying transport network? How will SD-WAN orchestration work best for itself and end-to-end?

These and other considerations in SD-WAN deployments will be the focus of this panel debate.

Applications for Transport SDN Automation

Abel Tong | Representative | OIF

Sr. Director of Solutions Marketing | Ciena

OIF Interop has successfully tested Transport SDN automation of basic functions for multi-domain, multi-layer carrier networks, including topology, service provisioning and resource updates.

OIF is now moving to test support of potential applications for Transport SDN automation, including candidates such as:
· Virtual Transport Network Services (VTNS) such as Network Slicing for 5G
· Application-driven interconnection of E-CORD sites across the carrier network
· Re-optimization using OAM, performance monitoring or telemetry analysis

OIF demos, combined with the new certification program, help accelerate deployment of market-driven transport SDN applications.

17:20

Transport SDN in disaggregated networks

Naoki Miyata | Manager Technology Development | NTT Communications

Disaggregated transport network is an innovative concept where transport components are separated into smaller devices and integrated with software more flexibly. It enables service providers to upgrade each component at shorter intervals and more various vendors to directly enter the market.

In spite of the advantages, there are some problems preventing service providers to introduce disaggregated devices. The interoperability between the devices is more essential and vulnerable. Integrating devices from multiple venders could be a backbreaking work for service providers.

In this presentation, we will share our use cases and expected benefits in disaggregated transport networks. Furthermore, we will discuss the approach and activities to the problems in introducing disaggregated transport devices. We utilize open and standard specifications to manage the devices, and collaborate with preceding communities to build up reference implementations in order to motivate other service providers to be involved in disaggregated transport network.

17:40

PANEL - Open Line Systems

The vision of OLS is powerful and seductive.

This panel will discuss progress in OLS and the prognosis for current approaches. What has been the impact of these approaches and what if any is the trade-off in performance? What tangible benefits does disaggregation of optical line systems bring to users?
