Christophe Alter comes from France Telecom Orange, where he is a member of a CTO team dedicated to standards and ecosystems development. He is responsible for France Telecom Orange Group' strategy regarding broadband networks standards.

Christophe is a member of the Broadband Forum Board of Directors since 2008 and now serves as the chairperson of the Technical Committee. He also serves as a co-editor of the Working Text 178 "Multi-service Broadband Network Architecture and Nodal Requirements". Since he first joined the Broadband Forum in 2004, Christophe has contributed mainly in End to End Architecture and Fibre Access Network Working Groups.

Christophe Alter worked at Orange Labs from 2000 until 2007, where he was responsible for network architecture designs in a number of projects, including wi-fi hotspots and first pilot deployments offering triple play to residential customers over ADSL access and packet aggregation. He also served as member of the board and chair of the Architecture Task Force of the European collaborative research project "MUSE" – MUlti Service Everywhere.

Santiago Alvarez is Manager of Technical Marketing in the Network Software and Systems Technology Group at Cisco Systems.

His group supports the introduction and customer adoption of new developments in IP Routing, MPLS, and Carrier Ethernet. He has been a regular speaker at various MPLS conferences throughout the world and at Cisco Networkers. He is the author of the Cisco Press title "QoS for IP/MPLS Networks". Santiago holds a BS in Computer Science, a MS in Computer Science and a MS in Telecommunications.

Mr. Valéry Augais
Senior Network Architect, Colt Technology Services


Valéry Augais is a senior network architect in Colt’s Strategy and Architecture team. He joined Colt’s engineering department in 1998 as an access and metro technologies specialist. Since 2005 he has been actively involved in the design and roll-out of next-generation Carrier Ethernet networks and services. His current focus is on the integration of the Optical, Ethernet and IP layers with the aim of simplifying the transport and service architectures. Valéry holds two M.Sc. degrees in Telecommunications and Computing from Telecom ParisTech and UPMC University, France.

Dr. Jeremy Batten

Jeremy Batten has been with Cable&Wireless for 11 years, responsible for various roles in transport network design, planning and build, and in product development.

For the international network he is the design authority for the core intelligent optical switch and the SDH/SONET Ethernet platform, and company wide for optical metro technology. He was the architect for Cable&Wireless Worldwide’s Data Centre Connectivity product and is currently developing its offering in International Ethernet Private Line.

Prior to Cable&Wireless, Jeremy obtained a Ph.D. in particle physics at Imperial College for research in beauty hadroproduction and then developed radiation hard optical data links for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. His work was important in demonstrating the viability of standard optical fibres in the high radiation environments of these experiments.

A member of the Institute of Physics and Institute of Engineering and Technology, his interests include high speed transmission, optical network evolution, and energy efficient networks.

Mr. Carlo Cavazzoni

Carlo Cavazzoni has been working at Telecom Italia Lab since 1994.

He has been involved in several European Projects on Optical Networking as IST LION “Layers Interworking in Optical Networks”, NOBEL “Next generation Optical network for Broadband European Leadership”, NOBEL phase 2 and MUPBED “Multi-Partner European Test beds for Research Networking”, coordinating the definition and experimental evaluation of innovative network solutions and technologies for intelligent and flexible optical networks.

During the last years he has been mainly involved in the definition of the architecture and the experimental evaluation of innovative Packet Transport technologies for their introduction in Telecom Italia transport network.

Mr. Frédéric Chatter

Frédéric Chatter joined the FT group in 1993 to work on SDH architecture and equipment, and to introduce this technology into FT transport networks.

Then he took responsibilities for data services (Frame-Relay, ATM, IP-VPN) provided to a panel of large account business customers, with the main objective to guarantee customer satisfaction and to propose evolutions meeting their requirements.

After 6 years with business customers, Frédéric finally moved to the corporate part of FT Group as a transport network architect, to lead studies and provide guidelines and recommendation for the whole FT Group on transport network evolution for backbone and aggregation. Studied subjects are: IP transport, L2 switching or OTN switching, ROADM, Control plane in the transport layers.

Mr. Pierre Combescure

Pierre Combescure is at present, Vice President of the Transmission and IP Networks Architectures and Systems Department within the Corporate Division of France Telecom Group.

In 2000 he joined the Networks & Carriers Division as Chief Technology Officer of the IP and ATM long-distance networks . In 2003 he was appointed head of the Engineering, Planning, and Architecture Department of the IP and Transmission Long-Distance Networks.

Previously, Pierre has been involved in speech processing research at France Telecom Group R&D for more than 20 years. He is one of the inventors of several standards, including wideband, GSM, and voice over IP speech coding algorithms.

Mr. Tommy Cook

Tommy Cook is the Founder and CEO of Calnex Solutions. He has almost 30 years' experience in the Telecoms Industry. His experience has been in telecoms test and measurement having been employed by Hewlett Packard, later Agilent Technologies, in their Telecom Test Instrumentation Divisions.

His career has seen him gain experience of every aspect of product development from hands-on design through to Programme Management of R&D Projects. He has held senior positions, leading Business Teams with P&L responsibility for the market segment Calnex is addressing.

Tommy has participated and is active in a number of Standards forums, such as the ITU-T and MEF standards groups.

Milorad is author/co-author of more than 100 technical papers, and eight US patents, and a sole author of three books, all related to optical communications and networking. He has taken part in numerous technical conferences and industry events, in some as a conference/session chairman, technical committee member, short course instructor, or invited speaker. He has been the NEC voting representative in Optical Interworking Forum from the very beginning.

Dr. John Dunne

John Dunne co-founded Intune in 1999 with Tom Farrell following EU-funded research work at University College Dublin.

He has a first class honours electronics degree and a Ph.D. in the field of tunable lasers from UCD and has spent his career working on the application of these devices into telecommunications systems. He is a co-inventor of some of Intune's core intellectual property on network systems and is published internationally in the field of optoelectronics.

Since founding the company, John has been responsible for the commercial vision of how Intune's core technology could be applied into the telecom market. His current role includes working with technology strategy leaders of network operators and network users to roll out Intune's tunable network innovation. He is a regular invited speaker at conferences on innovation, network technology and the future trends in the communications industry. He leads all research programs at Intune.

Dr. Luyuan Fang

Luyuan Fang has over 20 years of experience in the telecommunication industry. Since 2000, Luyuan has worked extensively in IP/MPLS architecture design and engineering. She was one of the first lead architects in AT&T’s IP MPLS and VPN deployments and is currently a Senior Product Manager at Cisco Systems focused on MPLS and Carrier Ethernet solutions.

Luyuan is actively engaged in the IETF where she has co-authored 9 RFCs and several active Internet Drafts focused on MPLS, L2/L3 VPNs, MPLS-Traffic Engineering (MPLS-TE) and MPLS-TP. Additionally, she has over 90 technical publications, including IEEE articles, conference papers and industrial speeches.

Luyuan is also an active member on behalf of Cisco at the Broadband Forum whereby she has participated in the development of several standards and technical tutorials which she has delivered over the years at key industry conferences and seminars.

Luyuan received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Flinders University of South Australia in 1991.

Hans-Martin Foisel joined the Optical Internetworking Forum ( in 1998, and has served as president 2007-2010 and is Carrier Working Group Chair since 2002. In these roles he was involved in the developments of multi-domain, multi-layer networking solutions as well as 100G technologies and systems.

At Deutsche Telekom he is Head of Hybrid Network Technology in the Fixed Mobile Engineering Germany Department. His main activities comprise intelligent optical networks, optical access networks and their basic infrastructure elements and systems.

He has more than 30 years of experience in optical telecommunication R&D, design, architecture and technology including prior roles at Heinrich-Hertz-Institute in Berlin.

Ms. Eve Griliches

Huub van Helvoort, MSEE, Eindhoven University of Technology, is a Senior Member of the IEEE. He has worked at Philips Telecommunication Industries, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, TranSwitch Corporation, and Huawei Technologies.

He is a designer and architect of second- and third-generation SDH equipment and devices. In addition, he has taught telecommunication technology to post graduate students at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Among van Helvoort's major achievements is the standardization of VCAT, LCAS, and GFP.

He represented the above companies in the international standards body ITU-T and the regional standards bodies ANSI OPTXS and ETSI. He is currently rapporteur of ITU-T Q10: "OAM for Transport Networks" and editor of several ITU-T recommendations.

Nicolai Leymann is working in his 13th year for Deutsche Telekom as a lead architect for IP based networks.

His major focus is the network and service architecture of the upcoming Next Generation Network of Deutsche Telekom. His work includes the integration of technologies – eg. IP-Multicast, VPLS etc. – in MPLS networks and VPN scenarios.

Nicolai is responsible for the “Seamless MPLS” architecture and the architecture of the wholesale services for Triple Play on top of MPLS. He is active in the IETF, working on the co-ordination of standardisation activities related to IPTV within Deutsche Telekom and is board member of the OpenIPTV Forum.

Mr. Julian Lucek

Julian Lucek is a Consulting Engineer at Juniper Networks, where he has been working with many service providers on the design and evolution of their networks.

Before joining Juniper Networks in 1999, he worked at BT for several years, at first in the Photonics Research Department and later in the data transport and routing area. During this time he gained a PhD in ultrahigh-speed data transmission and processing from Cambridge University. He is the holder of several patents in the area of communications technology.

He has a Master's degree in Physics from Cambridge University and holds Juniper Networks Certified Internet Expert (JNCIE) certification number 21. He is co-author of the book "MPLS-Enabled Applications: Emerging Developments and New Technologies", by Ina Minei and Julian Lucek. The second edition of this book was published in April 2008.

Carsten Rossenhövel is Managing Director of EANTC AG (European Advanced Networking Test Center) an independent test lab in Berlin, Germany. EANTC offers vendor-neutral network test services for manufacturers, service providers, and enterprises.

In this role, Carsten is responsible for the design of test methods and applications. He heads EANTC's manufacturer testing, certification group and interoperability test events. He has over 15 years of experience in data networks and testing, and his areas of expertise include Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), Carrier Ethernet, Triple Play, and Mobile Backhaul.

Carsten is one of the co-founders of EANTC AG. Before founding EANTC, he studied computer science at the Technical University of Berlin and worked as a consultant for banks, web service providers and computer hardware manufacturers.

Mr. Simon Spraggs

Simon Spraggs is a Distinguished Consulting Engineer responsible for Cisco’s NGN architecture.

In this role, and previous roles, he works with a wide range of service provider around the world looking at both Core and Carrier Ethernet environments. Recently, Simon has been particularly focused on the role and the evolution of the consumer and business packet networking environments.

This work is being conducted with a backdrop of increasing levels of video traffic, and the movement of compute and storage resources from private data centres and client devices towards virtualised compute resources residing within the network cloud.

Nurit Sprecher is a standards' senior specialist at Nokia Siemens Networks, with 20 years of experience in the Telecommunication industry.

For many years Nurit worked as an expert System Engineer and technologist, defining carrier grade network and product specifications in areas in the forefront of the industry technology. In the last couple of years, Nurit is in charge of the company's standard and Industry Environment activities related to Packet Transport Evolution, covering aspects such as packet transport network, synchronization, 40/100 GB Ethernet, MEF architecture and services, solutions over packet such as Mobile Backhauling, Enterprise services, etc.

Nurit is an expert in packet transport networks and technologies, contributes to the related work in IETF, ITU-T SG15, IEEE and BBF, and participates in core discussions on next generation packet transport network with Tier-1 carriers. Nurit participated in the European CELTIC TIGER project which analyzed solutions for a better adaptation of IP and Ethernet layers to address the Metro Ethernet growing market. This project won the CELTIC Excellence Gold Award.

Mr. Valerio Viscardi

Valerio Viscardi joined Cisco in January of 2000 through the Cisco acquisition of Pirelli Optical Systems division.

He had worked with Pirelli since 1998 as a R&D Engineer in the Optical Networking group. As an optical design engineer in Cisco, he was responsible for the design and development of the ONS 15454 ROADM product family. As part of his job responsibilities, he was responsible for optical technology scouting with a main focus on optical switching.

Valerio joined Cisco’s OTBU Technical Marketing organisation at the end of 2007, based in Monza (Italy). As a TME Valerio worked in pre and post sales roles, with a particular focus on IPoDWDM, Packet Optical Transport solutions, custom design and architectures validations and troubleshooting. He is now responsible for optical business development in Europe.

Valerio earned his masters degree in electrical engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 1997, working on al- optical switching and processing.

Mr. Steve West

Steve is co-founder and CTO of Cyan, a manufacturer of Packet Optical Transport Platforms, and developer of planning, management and verification software tools for transport networks.

Prior to founding Cyan, Steve was a member of the founding team at Turin Networks, and an early employee at Advanced Fibre Communications, all three companies located in Petaluma in beautiful Sonoma county California, an area known for its fine wines and great telecommunications products.

Steve has B.Sc and M.Sc Electrical Engineering degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
