Packet Optical Transport Networking 2011 - Post Event Report

In the past 6 months, over 230 network professionals have met at P-OTN in Berlin and Paris to debate the evolutionary issues brought to the table by some of the world’s largest carriers, and the solution innovations offered by primary system houses and new venture suppliers alike.

Delegates, supporters and sponsors know that Packet Optical has entered a period of strategic change, and even over the past 6 months, the market dynamics have changed considerably.  With a high level of interaction, carrier and vendor participants at Layer123’s P-OTN are helping drive that change, rather than following on behind.

Opening the Paris conference for the Broadband Forum, Technical Chair Christophe Alter laid out its multi-service architectural vision that governs its members work.  For Lead Operator France Telecom-Orange, Pierre Combescure provided a wide panorama of the carrier’s requirements, challenges and issues, as the carrier’s head of IP and Optical Group strategy.

MPLS-TP was a particular focus at the conference, with carriers and suppliers alike seeing it as a key convergence technology, but the extended standards development timescales are now causing different carriers to adopt different strategies. Read More...
