She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University, and an MBA from the University of Ottawa.

Mr. Jon Baldry

As Head of Marketing of Infinera's Metro Business Unit, Jon has responsibility for Strategic and Technical Marketing and Market Communications.

Jon has spent 20 years working in the telecoms industry, primarily in optical and packet-optical systems. He joined Infinera through the acquisition of Transmode in 2015, having joined Transmode in 2004 and has previously worked for Lucent Technologies and Sycamore Networks in a variety of sales and marketing roles.

Jon is a Chartered Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical Engineering and Electronics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST).

Mr. Paul Brooks

Paul Brooks has been Senior Technical Consultant at Virgin Media Business Wholesale section for more than 14 years, working mainly in the Mobile, Broadcast and Carrier sectors creating large bespoke Optical solutions including Mobile Backhaul, Metro Aggregation and Core Networks for the UK Mobile operators. Over the past couple of years focusing mainly on new cell site connectivity solutions utilising the latest Transmission equipment to define bespoke options in Fronthaul, Backhaul and Small Cell.

Starting out in Telecoms in the Electricity industry in 1985 Paul has 30 years' experience in Transmission networks previously working on all types of systems such as Microwave, PDH, SDH, Telecontrol, Fibre Optic and WDM, through his various roles in field, NOC and Network Design, moving into Technical Sales in 2002. As one of Virgin Media's lead Optical specialists, working very closely with internal Engineering and Architecture teams, and key optical vendors, he has created many leading solutions in Backhaul and Aggregation for all the UK's Mobile and LLU operators.

Fabrizio Danti joined Huawei Technologies in 2011 as leader of the Service Team in the Microwave Competence Centre in Milano, where he has the task of supporting and developing the Network Planning and Implementation Services in Huawei's Microwave projects around the world.

During more than 20 years in the telecommunication industry, he held several positions as Head of MW Technical Support in Siemens Mobile and Head of MW Business Excellence in Nokia Siemens Networks

Mr. Paolo Di Prisco

Paolo Di Prisco has 10 years experience in the telecommunications industry, especially in the field of radio transmission networks. He is currently Product Manager and he is covering Product Strategy role in Wireless Transmission business unit within Alcatel Lucent. Paolo is mainly focusing on millimeterwave products and on innovative solutions for next generation networks.

He has previously worked in the same company and business unit as R&D System and Architecture engineer, contributing to the definition of the first microwave packet radio platform.

Patrick Donegan is among the world's leading independent experts in backhaul network issues. His first Heavy Reading report, "Backhaul Strategies for Mobile Operators", was published in March 2006, encompassing extensive research with multiple leading mobile operators and equipment vendors.

Patrick has more than 20 years experience in the mobile communications and wider telecom market. He joined Heavy Reading from Nortel Networks in January 2006. At Nortel he spent five years as a senior manager of strategic planning for the company's wireless business – spanning GSM, CDMA, UMTS, WiMax, and other wireless technologies. Prior to Nortel, he spent two years in business research for Motorola's Corporate Strategy Office in EMEA and two years as a wireless analyst for the Yankee Group.

Mr. Matthias Fries

Matthias has been working in the field of RF wireless communications for over 10 years. He has a masters degree in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne which was followed by a PhD in Antenna design from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH).

He joined the Radio Frequency Division of HUBER + SUHNER in Switzerland in 2004. From 2010 to 2014 he was Head of the Antenna Product Line and was leading the initiative for the introduction of flat panel antennas for mm-wave frequencies.

Mr. Giuseppe Giliberto

Giuseppe Giliberto has been working in the telecommunication industry for more than 20 years and, in this period of time, he had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, with different roles and leading positions in multisite organizations.

Emmy Johnson is the Principal Analyst and Founder of Sky Light Research, specializing in wireless backhaul equipment and the applications that drive them. This includes, microwave point-to-point radios, millimeterwave point to point radios; and wireless Ethernet point-to-point bridges. She has over 15 years of experience as a market analyst with firms such as Cahners In-Stat Group and Synergy Research Group where she was the lead analyst covering a wide range of wireless and data networking technologies. This diverse background has given her a solid understanding of ATM and circuit based networks and what is required in the transition to IP.

Mr. Renato Lombardi

After graduation at the Technical University of Milano and service in the army as a junior officer, Renato Lombardi has twenty years of experience in the microwave industry covering several roles in Siemens and Nokia Siemens Networks.

At Siemens, after leading the Microwave Technical Sales in Germany, he was responsible in Milan for Business and Product Management, and later appointed as head of Research & Development. Following the merger with Nokia, he was part of the integration team and later Head of Product Management of the Microwave Business Line, responsible for the product portfolio, strategy planning and overall profit and loss of the product lines.

He joined Huawei Technologies in 2008 as Head of Microwave R&D, at Huawei European Research Centre, Milan, Italy and is currently the Head of Microwave Competence Centre.

Mr. Earl Lum

EJL Wireless Research is managed by Earl Lum who has 20+ years of experience within the wireless industry. Prior to starting EJL Wireless Research, Earl was the Managing Director of the Wireless Technology Equity Research sector for Montgomery & Co.

Before joining Montgomery & Co., he spent 7 years as the Executive Director for the Wireless Technology Equity Research group at CIBC World Markets. His team pioneered the methodology of supply chain analysis for equity research within the wireless sector. Earl also established core research areas focusing on compound semiconductor technologies including: GaAs, SiGe, InP, SiC and GaN.

Prior to joining Wall Street, Earl served as senior research analyst at Gartner Group/Dataquest. He established the wireless semiconductor research platform and pioneered research in the emerging GaAs compound semiconductor market.

He has also worked as Senior RF Design Engineer for Tyco Electronics M/A-Com, RF Transistor R&D Engineering Manager for Spectrian Corporation and Product Engineer at National Semiconductor Corporation. Earl holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Mr. László Nemes
Senior Expert, Wireless Portfolio | NEC


László has 20 years' experience in the product marketing of telecommunication technologies both in wire-line and wireless fields. He spent his last ten years in various positions within the sales and marketing of microwave transmission equipment.

László's current role is to lead the technology evolution towards the intelligent and automated backhaul networking by implementing new concepts based on synergy of optical and wireless devices. Before joining NEC he worked for Huawei as a microwave transmission Senior Marketing Manager paving the way for Huawei MW product market positioning in the Eastern European region.

László holds MCs degree in Electrical Engineering from Moscow Power Engineering Institute.

Mr. Steve Odell
Senior Designer – Mobile Backhaul Infrastructure Design | EE


Steve Odell is a Senior Designer at EE, with responsibility for Microwave and Millimetric Backhaul, and has a total of thirty six years experience within the Microwave Industry. Steve joined EE four years ago, initially on a consultancy basis before the offer to join permanently came in January 2014, and continues to take a prime role in EE's evaluation of Small Cell suitable backhaul solutions.

Prior to joining EE Steve worked for a variety of equipment vendors, including P-Com, Fresnel Microwave Systems, and Bridgewave Communications, where the held a variety of Technical, Regulatory, Senior Managerial and Director level positions. Steve also represented all of the above vendors on Ofcom FWILF and ETSI TM4 working parties and has a particular interest in regulatory/standards activities.

Prof. Claudio Paoloni
Professor | Lancaster University


Claudio Paoloni is Professor of Electronics in the Engineering Department at Lancaster University. He was Researcher in the Electronic Engineering Department at the University of Roma "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy.

In 2005 he won the STMicroelectronics GE 2005 award.

Claudio was in the Coordinating group of the FP7 European Project OPTHER (Optically Driven THz Amplifier) for the realization of the first 1THz traveling wave tube amplifier (2008 – 2012). He is author of more than 160 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings.

His main research fields are millimetre wave vacuum electron devices and wide band microwave integrate circuits for security, multigigabits communications and healthcare applications.

Claudio was Local Organisation Chair of the International Vacuum Electronics Conference 2009 in Rome and Conference Chair of the 6th UK/Europe China Millimeter Waves and THz Technologies Workshop, UCMMT 2013, in Rome.
He is IEEE Senior member and member of the IEEE Electron Device Society Vacuum Electronics Technical Committee.

He was Guest Editor for the Special Issue of Transaction on Electron Devices on Vacuum Electronics (June 2014) and is a member of the International Advisory and Technical Committees of different main conferences in the electronic field.

He is also the H2020 TWEETHER project Coordinator.

Mr. Michel Peruyero
Head of Product Line Management and Product Strategy | Alcatel-Lucent


Michel Peruyero is Senior Director leading the wireless transmission product line and product strategy group inside Alcatel-Lucent's IP routing and transport business line. He has global responsibilities for Alcatel-Lucent's wireless transmission product management and evolution.

Prior to this, Michel was leading the fixed wireless access product management and then served as head of the networking team within the CTO office of the mobile communication group, dealing with mobile radio, broadband wireless access as well as wireless transmission. Michel was then appointed product strategy lead for the 4G wireless solutions within Alcatel-Lucent working first on WiMAX and then including the global LTE product line and in particular its LTE-adv evolution for both its FDD and TDD areas.

Michel graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Electronique et de radio- électricité (ENSERG) of the Institut National Polytechnique, Grenoble in 1983.

Mr. James Ries
Senior Product Manager | Alcatel-Lucent


Jame Ries is Senior Product Manager, Wireless Transport, IP Routing and Transport Division He is responsible for the Alcatel-Lucent 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) product strategy. In this role, he provides the product definition and requirements to address the North American small cell and macro cell mobile backhaul market. James also manages the global product release strategy for the 9500 MPR.

In his 17 years of communications networks experience, he has held various roles inside Alcatel-Lucent with expertise gained in the areas of communications network software development , optical networks, and network management. James holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock Texas.

Mr. Uwe Rüddenklau
Director Marketing mmWave | Infineon Technologies


Uwe Rüddenklau currently heads Product Marketing for mmWave RF at Infineon – HQ Germany.

He is based in Munich, Germany and is mmWave RF expert focused on V-band, E-band backhaul radios to reduce TCO and ease RF design, testing and production for device manufacturer. His job also requires him to provide market analysis in mobile backhaul.

Uwe has many years of industry experience and has worked in system engineering, sales and technical marketing of RF solutions in Consumer TV, Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and Cellular Phone on a worldwide base. Prior to Infineon Technologies, Uwe held senior positions with Lantiq and Siemens.

Uwe holds a Masters (Dipl.Ing.) of Electrical Engineering along with Bachelor in Marketing.

Dr. Alexander Schneider
Transport Network Development | Telekom Austria Group


Alexander Schneider joined Mobilkom Austria in 1999 after doing research on UMTS at Technical University Vienna. He was the responsible project manager for the world first launch of a nationwide GPRS network. In 2001 he became department manager for Core Network Planning and in 2005 he became department manager for Backbone and Transmission Network Planning. In 2007 he changed to the international division of mobilkom austria group being responsible for Transmission Planning.

After the merger of mobilkom austria with Telekom Austria in july 2010 this division was merged with Telekom Austria Group Holding where he is responsible for Transport Network Development.

Alexander holds a Ph.D. in technical sciences at Technical University Vienna.

Mr. Dimitris Siomos
Wireless Backhaul Expert | COSMOTE


Dimitris Siomos is a Wireless Backhaul Expert at COSMOTE Mobile Communications and a member of CTO-MAC team (Deutsche Telekom AG, Group Technology & Europe), responsible for the development of innovative and efficient mobile backhaul network architectures.

As a representative of Deutsche Telecom AG at ETSI mWT ISG was also the rapporteur of the "Applications and use cases of millimetre wave transmission" GS paper.

He has 10 years experience in the Telecommunications industry and holds MSECE and MBA degrees.

Dr. Edvin Škaljo

Edvin Škaljo has more than 15 years' experience in telecommunication, and a PhD. degree from the University of Tuzla. He is the head of department for subscriber and terminal devices in Telecommunication Center Sarajevo – BH Telecom. He has been a pioneer in implementation of numerous projects and new services in the field of optical and access networks.

Edvin is an assistant professor at the University of Sarajevo. He is also associate editor of the Journal "Fiber and Integrated Optics", and a general chair of the annual International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks – FOAN. Edvin is the author of several journal and conference papers as well as several international presentations.

Prof. Andy Sutton
Principal Network Architect | EE


Professor Andy Sutton is EE's Principal Network Architect with responsibilities for RAN architecture evolution and mobile backhaul strategy and architecture. Andy has 30 years of experience within the telecommunications industry, mainly in radio access, transmission and transport network strategy, architecture and design.

Andy's research interests include; distributed and centralised RAN architectures and protocols, radio access network dimensioning and QoS, microwave and millimetre wave radio systems along with synchronisation and time distribution in telecommunications networks. During his career Andy has worked for Mercury Communications Ltd, Orange, France Telecom Group, H3G and EE.

Andy is a Visiting Professor with the Department of Computing, Science and Engineering at the University of Salford where he delivers 6 annual lectures. He also works with the University on collaborative research projects. He is a research mentor and industrial partner of the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey.

Andy is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Member of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals and Fellow of the British Computer Society. Andy contributes to International telecommunications standardisation activities and several industry forums.

Mr. Romain Tajan
Product Manager | NEC


Romain has 13 years' experience in the telecoms engineering sector with particular focus on microwave and optical backhaul solutions. He works in NEC's business solution team, focusing on positioning of the company's microwave product portfolio and developing network optimization services. Romain has worked on the design and implementation of optical and microwave transmission networks across France, Madagascar, the Central African Republic, Tunisia and Morocco.

Prior to joining NEC Romain worked at Beijaflore as consultant where he was responsible for validating and integrating microwave/optical network management systems for major European mobile operators.

Romain holds a diploma in telecommunications from the Ecole nationale supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne (ENST Bretagne) and is fluent in English, French and Spanish.

Mr. Steve Walthew

Steve Walthew heads up the Transport Network business development activities at NEC in the EMEA region, working with key customers to optimise networks around the region, addressing cost, capacity and network management matters to create and drive real growth in customer profitability.

A seasoned practitioner, Steve brings a wealth of practical experience to help customers understand how to get the most out of their networks – at the same time as delivering critical insights into NEC's innovative approach to the evolution of backhaul to empower the networks of tomorrow. His experience of over 35 years in the telecoms sector includes working in British Telecom (BT) and British Gas Telecoms Services – driving turnkey microwave implementations during periods of significant expansion. At Ionica plc., Steve delivered a regional rationalisation programme to realise cost & performance goals. On the vendor side of the industry he has provided a range of technical services in Telettra before moving to NEC over 15 years ago.

Since working in NEC Steve has provided technical direction to NEC's design teams to better meet market needs and has been at the forefront of introducing and developing the PASOLINK business throughout the UK and Europe. Used to travelling in the UK, Europe & further afield, Steve brings his organisation, communication and relationship building skills to both the customer and the company environment.

Dr. Nader Zein

Nader Zein is a Chief Engineer at NEC Europe. He is a recognized expert in Advanced Mobile, Wireless and Multimedia Communications Technologies. He has 31 years' experience in the field of Wireless and Multimedia communications and Broadcasting,

Nader has been a three times winner of NEC Telecom Standards Special Activity Award for 2008, 2010 and 2014, 1st Grade Contribution Award for 2011 on 4G R&D project, and NEC Official Appointment Award in 2012 for outstanding activities.

He holds several official positions in standards organizations and fora. He is a renowned speaker and panelist in Global Telecom Exhibitions, Market Trade-shows and Events. He is a Lecturer on Advanced Courses and Tutorials on DVB Systems, OFDM/OFDMA and 4G technologies.

Nader held the position of honorary Professor and external Lecturer at the University of Lancaster. His reputation has been cemented by his publications in National and International Professional Journals, over 200 standards contributions and by his election to a number of National and International Professional Committees.
